What is BIOS ?

  • BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System.
  • BIOS software stored on a tiny memory chip in your system motherboard.
  • it is pronounce as BY-OSS.
  • The BIOS firmware is non-volatile.
  • Initializes the Computer hardware as the computer is being boot.

The Functions of a BIOS

The four major functions of a Basic input/output system (BIOS)

  • POST.
  • Bootstrap loader.
  • BIOS setup.
  • BIOS drivers.

There are two types of BIOS

  • Legacy BIOS :- Legacy BIOS was used in older motherboards to turn on the computer. Legacy BIOS have limitations as they have no capacity to deal with or recognize drives bigger than 2.1 TB.
  • UEFI :- it stands for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. The UEFI can accommodate 2.2 TB or bigger drives.

What is CMOS ?

  • CMOS stands for Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor.
  • CMOS is a combination of NMOS (Networked Media Open Specifications) and PMOS  (P-channel metal–oxide–semiconductor) transistors.
  • The Motorola 146818 chip was the principal CMOS RAM chip to be utilized in early IBM PCs.
  • CMOS is normally use to describe a little memory on a PC motherboard.
  • it is pronounce as see-moss.

What is UEFI ?

  • UEFI stand for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface.
  • UEFI is view as a replacement to successor the traditional BIOS Legacy.
  • UEFI deals with the PC’s motherboard through a particular firmware.
  • The latest version is UEFI 2.9 in march, 2021

Advantages of UEFI

  • Boot mode :- Microsoft Windows clients can run 32-bit UEFI or 64-digit UEFI.
  • Drives :- UEFI supports boot drives of 2.2 TB and higher limits.
  • Drivers :- it is supports discrete drivers.
